BSR use a PC USB interfaced to a 18F4550 PIC, the pic records optically each lanes car pass to 0.001sec (1/1000), with the PC monitoring the PIC data.  This data is used by the PC to manage the starting lights/sequences and power to each lane via USB to the PIC, with driver false starts, lap / race times, average times/speed, race/session positions, displayed and all saved to file by the PC.  The PIC is a TTL 5 volt input and output I/O device connected directly to optical sensors and via a ULN2803A(current sinking) to provide additional power for RELAYS and LED'S, as shown in the following diagram.
Note: The TTL lines are also compatible with a PC printer parallel port
